The serious bio
Joanna Bowden is the founder and lead photographer at Bloom Branding Photography, a Brisbane-based studio specialising in strategic personal brand photography for professionals, founders and leaders ready to be seen, recognised and remembered for their work.
With over 15 years’ experience as a professional photographer, Joanna has photographed hundreds of branding clients and thousands of portraits and headshots. She works primarily with medical specialists, allied health professionals, lawyers, consultants, corporate leaders and founders who are stepping into greater visibility through leadership, speaking, media, online presence or long-term brand building.
Joanna’s work focuses on people rather than products. She is known for capturing the individuals behind respected practices and organisations, translating credibility, expertise and human presence into imagery that feels calm, grounded and authoritative.
Her photography has been published in Forbes Australia, Style Magazine and Scholastic publications, and featured on the front cover of Auralis Magazine, a global digital publication reaching over 2 million readers each month. Client imagery has also appeared in large-scale campaigns and billboards, including Times Square in New York.
Clients come to Joanna not just for photography, but for clarity. Her signature branding packages include dedicated brand strategy sessions where business goals, values and positioning are explored, then translated into purposeful visual content designed to support real marketing needs across websites, media and speaking profiles.
Bloom Branding Photography has delivered branding portrait campaigns for organisations such as Pauls Milk and Bondi Chai, capturing the people behind Australian brands — from farmers and café owners to founders and leaders.
Before focusing fully on photography, Joanna worked as a graphic designer and web designer, later moving into web content and internal communications roles in Brisbane and Dublin, including with Diageo, home to global brands such as Guinness, Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Baileys This background informs her strong understanding of audience, messaging and how brands communicate clearly and consistently.
Joanna operates from her own professional studio in Brisbane and photographs clients both in-studio and on location.
She lives in Brisbane with her husband, two daughters and their rescue cat. When she’s not behind the camera, she’s usually mid-renovation (a long-standing passion spanning more than 20 years) with a paintbrush or power tool in hand.
The not-so-serious bio
Please just call me Jo
I was accepted into journalism at uni, drawn to storytelling and human behaviour, but didn’t end up pursuing it.
Instead, I studied interior architecture, learning how space, detail, and design shape perception. When I picked up a camera in my 30s, it all came together.
Today, I create strategic brand photography for professionals who’ve outgrown their current images — building authority and trust without feeling stiff or staged.
It's your time
As a perfectionist and introverted business owner, I know how hard it is to step into the spotlight. Fear of judgement can have you procrastinating for years. You're stuck doing the 'busy' the work, while your peers are getting all the recognition.
If you want to become a leader and be noticed, then it's time to share who you are.
You'll have the most experienced portrait photographer by your side, who understands that being an expert in your field, does not translate into confidence in front of the camera.
I know you feel nervous
I know you're out of your comfort zone, but I have a magical way of relaxing even the most nervous of clients. You'll be directed, fussed over, and celebrated from the minute you arrive. There's no ego in my studio. I'll deliver an incredible experience that will make you feel seen, supported and so incredibly proud of yourself.
I'll guide you from start to finish
You're not a professional model, or a TikTok influencer, and I won't expect you to act like one. You're brilliant at what you do, but lose all that confidence when a camera is pointed at you. Every single conversation with a client begins with "Just so you know, I'm very awkward in front of the camera".
That's why I intentionally and specifically direct you through every minute of our time together. You will never, ever, wonder what to do next. You'll understand exactly what our plan is before the shoot, because we've worked on it together. Shoot day is to execute that plan with my creative direction. There's nothing for you to do, except follow my lead.
A relaxed version of you, on a really good day
You don’t need to be polished. You need to look grounded, credible, and completely yourself.
After 15 years photographing people, I understand how to shape light, angles, and direction to create portraits that feel natural, not manufactured. I work calmly and efficiently, guiding you into poses that feel considered and comfortable.
But what matters most isn’t how it looks. It’s how it lands.
A successful portrait carries conviction — in your stance, your expression, your presence. That confidence is visible before a word is read. My job is to bring that assurance forward, so your image communicates leadership, trust, and authority without trying too hard.
That’s why my portraits don’t feel posed. They feel credible, composed, and quietly powerful. If that’s the standard you’re after, I’d love to work together.
